Show SU to offer college credit to students through telecourse program this fall CEDAR CITY - A series of nine telecourses will begin Oct. 2 and 3 over KUED, Channel 7. Southern Utah State College will offer credit for eight of them, Telecourses, nationally produced college classes taught over television, bring educational subjects to life through professionally produced programs which are suppplemented with printed materials and study guides. "Convenienve is the key to telecourses," Phillip C. Carter, SUSC assistant vice president for academic programs, said. "With telecourses, your college classroom is as close as your television, even if the nearest college is many miles away." SUSC credit has been granted to more than 150 persons since KUED-7, an affiliate of th Public Broadcasting System, began broadcasting telecourses last fall. "Some earned SUSC credit while completing classwork in their homes in Montana. Many more earned credit along with Wasatch Front as did others right here in southern Utah," Dr. Carter said. "According to a KUED survey," he continued, "the majority of persons take talecourses because they want the college credit. Many others register because of the convenience, still others for recertification, to increase their salaries or to finish general education requirements faster." Fall semester offerings are The American Short Story (literature); The American Story: Beginnings to 1877 (history); The Art of Being Human (introduction (in-troduction to humanities); Contemporary Con-temporary Health Issues (introduction to health); Geography of Utah (geography); Personal Finance (elective business course); The Shakespeare Plays (literature); Understanding Un-derstanding Human Behavior (introduction to psychology); and Writer's Workshop (English composition). SUSC credit is available for all of the course except ex-cept Geography of Utah. SUSC is the only host institution in the state to offer credit for so many of the telecourses. "We offer as many classes as possible .. each semester as a commitment to the people in our service area," the assistant vice president said. "Involvement "In-volvement in the program gives us access to resources we've never had before. It's an exciting, ex-citing, stimulating and convenient way to earn college credit." "Telecourses combine the televised lessons with related reading assignments and examinations, all coordinated by faculty sponsors here at SUSC," Dr. Carter said. "Most programs are aired twice during the week for added convenience, and toll-free numbers is available so that students can keep in touch with their faculty sponsors." The toll-free number 1-800-662-1897, extension 7850 is also the number to be called for telecourse registration forms, textbook orders and a detailed class agenda. Registration will be completed for fall semester courses through the SUSC Division of Continuing Education, Old Administration 203. All fall telecourses begin on Oct. 2 except for the Shakespeare Plays which begin Oct. 3. A $90 fee will be charged for three credit classes, $129 for The American Story; Beginnings to 1877, the only five credit course offered this semester. Fall telecourses and SUSC faculty sponsors are; The American Shorty Story, a three-credit course featuring the works of 17 of America's greatest 19th and 20th century authors. Jim Aton, assistant professor of English at SUSC, is the faculty sponsor. The American Story : Beginnings to 1877, traces American history from pre-historic beginnings to the Centennial celebration in 1876. Wayne K. Hinton, associate professor of history, is the sponsor. The Art of Being Human, a nontraditional, introductory course to the humanities for lower and upper level division students. James Harrison, associate professor of German, is the faculty sponsor for the three-credit course. Contemporrary Health Issues, a three-credit three-credit class offering a comprehensive look at critical health issues facing today's society. The faculty sponsor is Ben Davidson, instructor of physical education and head athletic trainer at SUSC. Personal Finance, a three-credit course which examines the basics of budgeting and buying, |
