CEDAR CITY "It's time to put Utah first, that is what I'm running on,"stated Steve Dirks, during last week's Cedar City Chamber of Commerce Com-merce luncheon. Dirks is vying for a congressional seat against incumbent Republican James Hansen. Dirks said that the most important issue is Utah's high unemployment unem-ployment rate. He added that Utah has a number of industries that could decrease unemployment, one of its largest, especially in southern Utah, being tourism. "This is a billion dollar industry. There is $75,000 worth of revenue generated by tourism yearly and helps greatly in economic development," develop-ment," said Dirks and stressed that the state must keep this industry going. He added that in cases where the principal bread winner is unemployed, the number of cases of spouse and child abuse and also alcohol abuse goes up. Also, for every one percentage point of unemployment, $25 billion is added to the federal deficit. Dirks also stated that he would strongly support President Reagan when he was right and also that he would vigorously oppose him when he felt the President was not acting in the best in- Steve Dirks addresses the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce.
