Show City's clean-up week receives little support, though needed Whatever happened to Cedar City's clean-up week? From an observer's point of view, it seems that both the city and the residents, after a large amount of publicity, ignored or mostly ignored the entire idea. Unfortunately, it shouldn't have been ignored. The city is in need of a clean up and facelift. In all fairness, the city and some individuals did do some work to clean-up the area. City trucks were available to pick-up tree limbs and other large trash, and some residents took advantage of the service. In fact, the trucks are still available. All one need do is call the city office and let someone know where to pick up the trash. Also, the weather didn't cooperate, and the trees the city was going to give to each resident to plant didn't arrive. Yet, there still seemed to be a lack of an overall effort during the week to do anything to brighten and spruce things up. Things just didn't happen. The city didn't have the fantastic kickoff for the week that it promised. The residents didn't pitch in and clean up their residences and businesses like we would have hoped they would. Yet, as we said before, the need was definitely there for some concerted effort at making the city look a little more presentable. In fact, the need is still there, and the work and clean up should still be done. So now that the weather has hopefully warmed up enough to work and accomplish something outside, we would encourage everyone to try again. Cedar City is and should be a place to be proud of, but as we drove around on Memorial Day we couldn't help but notice the weeds on both sides of Main Street as one enters the town from the north and the south. Such is certainly not a very inviting gateway to the city for tourists and other visitors. A , , This problem could easily be corrected by a few business and land owners and the city working together to mow or clean out the unsightly areas. We also couldn't help but notice that the grass on both city parks was quite yellow and unmowed, this for the long holiday weekend. We're sure that there is some reason behind this, but we are equally sure that such was not very impressive for the large number of visitors to the city this past weekend. We also noticed the large number of homes that could use a little sprucing up, and we noticed, with some chagrin, the weeds in front of the Iron County Record office. Yet, again in fairness, we noticed the homes and businesses that are cleaned up and looking very good. In fact, probably a majority of them are an attractive addition to the city: These people need to be commended. So this week, we would ask everyone to try again. We will start by mowing the weeds in front of our office. We hope others will follow suit and make this the beautiful and inviting city that it can and should be. |
