Show Area scholars to compete winner receives a $200 cash award and each runner-up a $100 cash award. Five colleges and universities in Utah are offering full-tuition scholarships to winners, and many are offering part-tuition scholarships to runners-up. Ninety-seven students representing nine high schools and five school districts will compete for awards and honors in the third annual Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar competition today at the Southern Utah State College auditorium. After a day of judging, a winner and two runners-up in each of the 12 categories will be announced an-nounced at the banquet and progaram tonight at 7. Dr. Van Bushnell, SUSC's Coordinator for the Southwest Sterling Scholar Program will serve as master of ceremonies of the banquet with Dr. Grant Von Harrison, professor of graduate education at Brigham Young University as the guest speaker. Highlighting the program will be the presence of Jackie Nokes, assistant to the president of KSL; and Lavor Chaffin, education editor of the Deseret News. Nokes will act as master of ceremonies at the banquet, and Chaffin will talk about the Sterling Scholar Program. Each winner and runner-up will be given a Sterling Scholar pin, and each finalist will receive an embossed Sterling Scholar certificate. Each |
