Show Lady T Birds Capture Conference Crown The way the Southern Utah State College women's Softball team figures it, they did this season what they should have done last season. What the Thunderbirds did was capture the Rocky Mountain Atheltic Conference Con-ference championship, a feat they were supposed to have performed last year, but did not. Solid pitching and good fielding allowed the T-Birds to shut out Mesa, 7-0, and whip defending champion Western State twice, 9-1 and 3-2. SUSC came through the double elimination tournament tour-nament unbeaten. But now the bad news . . . The Thunderbirds compiled com-piled a so-so 12-12 overall record which is not good enough to allow them to progress to district com petition in the AIAW. Teams are selected for district play on the basis of their overall won-lost record. That means the season is over for the 'Birds. Center fielder Lori Mott won the team's individual batting championship with an average of .376. Last season she was beat out on the title in the final game of the year by a single percentage point. Lori also led the team in hits (29) and sacrifices (5). Other individual statistical titles were won by first baseman Pam Beckstrand (most put outs, 105; triples, 3), Bonnie Cahill (home runs, 2; runs batted in, 17), Denise Long (runs, 21; stolen bases, 8; walks, 12; strikeouts, 9), Susan Pedersen and Marcia Whiting (doubles, 6 each). |
