Show Union Pacific No. 8444 Norther Class, 4-8-4 wheel arrangement. "FFE" Class designation. First of type built in 1937 for freight and passenger service. The "Iron Horse" Rolls Again Residents in southern Utah will have an opportunity op-portunity to see a steam locomotive running on the Union Pacific Railroad this month for the first time in 24 years. UP is sending its famed steam locomotive No. 8444 to Las Vegas where it will take part in the 75th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Nevada city with the coming of the railroad on May 15, 1905. The locomotive will arrive in Milford, a Union Pacific crew change point, onthe evening of May 13 on its way south from Salt Lake City. Members of the Union Pacific Old Timer's Club in Milford will be on hand to show the engine to the public. The engine will depart Milford the next morning for Las Vegas. It will be on display in Las Vegas May 16 and 17 as part of Union Pacific's participation par-ticipation in the city's celebration. The engine will return to Milford May 18 where it will stay overnight before continuing to Salt Lake City. It will be pulling public excursion trains May 24 and 25 between Salt Lake City and Provo under the sponsorship of the Promotory Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. ine last siearn locomotive to operate under its own power through southern Utah v was No. 9000 which was run to southern California in May 1956 where it was donated for display. No. 8444 was the last steam locomotive built for UP. It was delivered in 1944. It has been based in Cheyenne, Wyoming since 1958 where it is maintained for special excursion service only. It operated in regular service in southern Utah along with its sister 800-class engines from 1946 to 1948. The locomotive, originally numbered 844, had an extra digit added in 1962 to avoid confusion with diesel j numbers in the 800s. |
