This was 3 lower than In 1978. Breeding ewes on January 1, 1979 numbered 388,000, 3 percent below the number estimated a year earlier. The harvest of clover-timothy clover-timothy hay and the second cutting of alfalfa were about 50 percent complete. Aphids thrips and grasshoppers have caused damage in some areas. Quality appeared to be fair - to good. Small grains continued to ripen and harvest was gaining intensity. in-tensity. Yield prospects were generally good, but the lack of rain for the last month reduced prospects In dry land areas. Range feed continued to dry out and mature at lower and intermediate elevations as soil moisture was very short.
