Show STUDENT LOAN PROGRAM IS EXPANDED A law enacted by Congress Cong-ress last year has expanded two of the varied programs operated by the U.S. office of Education to help students finance their college education, edu-cation, University of Utah students are being reminded. re-minded. The 1978 Middle Income In-come Student Assistance Act made changes in both the Basic Educational Opportunity Op-portunity Grant Program and the Guaranteed Student Loan Program. As a result of the new law, and additional 1.5 million college students across ac-ross the nation are expected to become eligible for some level of financial assistance during the 1979-80 academic year. Students who were previously pre-viously denied either a grant or low interest loan under these two programs are being encouraged to reapply on the basis of changes effected ef-fected by the law signed by President Carter on November Novem-ber 1, 1978. Established in 1972, the basic grant program provides pro-vides eligible needy students with annual education grants that range from $200 to $1,200. The new legislation legis-lation has raised the maximum maxi-mum allotment to $1,800. The new law not only increases in-creases the average award to current recipients, but expands the program to include in-clude students from middle income families, or those in the income range of about $15,000 to $26,000. |
