They think profits are running from 35 percent to 45 percent, whereas profits pro-fits have never averaged more than 6 percent any year in 30. Such massive misunderstanding misunder-standing is hard to explain. If a sound, profitable, private pri-vate enterprise system could be restored, it would solve the inflation problem, the unemployment problem and the enregy problem. So, as I see it, the greatest problem facing America today Is the problem of re -selling our American people on the virtues vir-tues of private enterprise; on the deadening hand of dictatorship dic-tatorship and on the tragedies trag-edies of Communism. all three of these problems is to restore a healthy free private enterprise economy. It was a private enterprise economy that advanced Amerca to the foremost place among all the nations of the world. It was private enterprise that made possible pos-sible the winning of World War I and World War II. It was through private enterprise enter-prise that in 1945, America , was producing more manufactured manu-factured goods than the rest of the world combined. It was private enterprise that enabled en-abled America to give away about $250 billion in free charity to help other nations since World War II. It was private enterprise that multiplied mul-tiplied productivity, and thereby multiplied wages, and lifted the standard of living liv-ing in America to a level never before dreamed of. In view of all this one is dumbfounded about the nation-wide attack upon private pri-vate enterprise in America today. An attack promoted through the media and through the educational system. sys-tem. An attack ever articulated articu-lated In the halls of Congress. This attack has led most of America's current youth to believe that private enterprise enter-prise is dominated by selfish ' capitalists, enjoying outrageous out-rageous profits. Many times they have heard about the profiteers, economic royal - AMERICA'S NUMBER ON PROBLEM Some of our excellent American Am-erican commentators refer to Inflation as the number one problem facing the nation and they make quite a strong case. They see fearful tragedies trag-edies ahead because of continued con-tinued inflation. Some others refer to unemployment as the number one problem and indicate the disasters that can follow continued high unemployment. un-employment. President Carter recently referred to the energy crisis as, In some respects, comparable to a war in its, Importance. The present energy bill, and all other legislation that may be passed to solve the energy problem will, In the end, be useless unless we find a way to Increase the supply of the energy and to increase the conservation of energy. Unemployment likewise like-wise can have no satisfactory solution until we find adequate ade-quate demand for enough goods to put people to work at productive jobs. It is doubtful that government -made jobs are any real help at all. Inflation is another problem that is very hard to solve. We are now in the throes of an inflationary era; we are increasing the rate of Inflation year by year trying to avoid a depression. It is likewise doubtful that that policy will have a happy hap-py ending. It will more likely like-ly lead to a tragic ending. While all of these prob lems we have mentioned are exceedingly important, the cure for them however, is still far more Important. To diagnose a man's illness is important, but of very little use unless it helps in bringing bring-ing about a cure. While we have diagnosed Inflation, unemployment un-employment and the energy shortage, we haven't yet adopted a long range cure for any one of them . Our ship of state is still riding the rough seas, but she is taking water wa-ter badly. If something isn't done to solve these particular particu-lar problems the ship of state will ultlm ately sink. Actually, the only hopeful solution to |
