Show ! : ' M k t. , W - in. -J POW SPEAKER: Col. Jay Hess, famed Vietnam prisoner of war, was the speaker for the MHS Veterans Day assembly. , Col. Hess showed slides of drawings of prison life, made by a fellow prisoner, and told students tales of being a prisoner and how it made you love freedom free-dom and the American way of life. Col. Hess spent 5-12 years in what he called the Hanoi Hilton, after being shot down. He is the holder of the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and Purple Heart. He said, "Weakness does not enhance security," in emphasizing the need for a strong Am erica. He repeated a quote he made upon arriving back in Bountiful after being released. "It's a special honor to serve your country under difficult circumstances." Something happens to you when you fight for a cause, he said, as he urged patriotism and involvement. |
