Ameri-ca). Thursday evening we attended at-tended the annual Open House where FFA awards and achievements were presented. pre-sented. Fourteen mmbers and about twenty guests were there. Wells Farrer, a teacher In Beaver's district for 32 years, welcomed us and turn ed the time over to the youth for the Opening Ceremony. Cere-mony. Next on the agenda was a demonstration by the Parliamentary Parlia-mentary Procedure Team: Alan Wood, Julie Hutchlngs, Terry Lemon, John Roberts, and Neil Craw. This fine team took second in the Regional Re-gional contest just m issing the first place by one point. Neil also gave a report he had prepared and given as he represented Beaver in Hurricane at the Regional Contest. It concerned the drought It's affects on livestock In Utah and other states. Neil brought out the fact that though farm expenses ex-penses are increasing stead - JUDGING TEAM AWARDS ily, the farmers income from his produce or stock remains about the same. "People need to be educated," he said, "for agriculture will always be needed and need to be improved as the worlds population pop-ulation increases. The FFA (Food For America) program can be taken to school children, chil-dren, and youth groups to acquaint ac-quaint them with the many facets of today's farmer and help make farming a reward-' reward-' ing and sought after job." Mr. Farrer ' presented awards as follows: State Farmer in Agriculture: John Roberts; Soils, John Roberts. Livestock JudgingTeam, Jeff Williams, Kelly Smith, Rodney Rod-ney Bradshaw took second in the contest. Jeff was second high scorer In the entire state! Soil Judging Team, Shaun Pearson, Alan Wood, Terry Lemon took third place In the Region. The State Livestock Judging Team, Alan Wood, Shaun Pearson, Kelly Sm ith, Terry received an excellent rating in the top 13 of 47 schools. The State Land Judging Team also received an excellent rating, Shaun Pearson, Alan Wood, Terry Lemon, and John Roberts. State Dairy Judging, Good - Wade Yard-ley, Yard-ley, Sheb Yardley, Terry Lemon, and John Roberts. John Roberts received an engraved gold pin for the Foundation Award in Soil and Water. Star Dairy Farmer was Wade Yardley. Crop Production, Alan Wood. Star Chapter Farmer Award, Julie Hutchings (who, by the way, won a spelldown on FFA over 75 boys!). Star Green -hand went to Kelly" Smith. Chosen as this years Adult' Honorary Chapter Members were: Sheldon Roberts, Vern Wood, Kent Hofheins, and Robin Bradshaw. It isn't often we find two "American Farmers" in one small meeting, but Robin Bradshaw received the award last year and Kent Hofheins has been chosen and will go to Kansas City to receive his award in the fall. Only one American Farmer is chosen for every thousand members in the State. Officers for next year are: Julie Hutchings, President; Terry Lemon, Vice-President; ChadDalton,Secretary; Clay Robinson, Treasurer; Milton Smith, ReporterjRod-ney ReporterjRod-ney Carter, Sentinal; Mike Nowers, Historian. The retiring officers presented pre-sented Mr. Farrer with an ice chest in appreciation for all he has done for the members. FFA's purpose is to teach and learn about Agriculture so that it can be improved so that it will be able to meet the increasing needs of todays world. And to prepare pre-pare young people to enter, enjoy and be successful in this field.
