The Deseret String Band, known and applauded in music cir-. cir-. cles throughout the country and Great Britain, will perform per-form in concert in the Mil -ford High School Auditorium at 8 p.m. The Deseret String Band consists of four musicians: musi-cians: Hal Cannon (concertina, (concer-tina, mandolin, banjo, guitar, pump organ, vocals); Ron Kane (fiddle, vocals); Rich McClure (guitar, dobro);and Leonard Coulson (banjo, bo -drum, vocals). The music they play can be loosely de -scribed as old-time string band. Some of it Is bluegrass, but much of it is older, dat ing from music the early Utah settlers brought with them and the Civil War era. The Band collects the folk music, gathering old tunes from a wealth of sources. They find music on old 78 RPM recordings, make tapes at music festivals, and study field recordings. They find field recordings to be an especially es-pecially rich source. These are tapes made by traveling to remote sections of the country where styles of traditional tra-ditional music have not been hybridized with modern influences. in-fluences. The Band believes the old saying that it is eas -ier to understand a nation by its music than by learning its language. Traditional music reflects the lifestyles of its people. Music that has been passed down through several generations can only be preserved pre-served through field record - 4 ( r ) . ii latijMHh i'll'ltl WiWitHlililil 'ilPfiii iiiili HSjm DESERET STRING BAND IN MILFORD FRIDAY EVENING |
