Show It's an exciting time for Milford residents as each bite of the drill bits bring closer (we hope) anewpros-perlty anewpros-perlty for Milford and Beaver Beav-er County. Reports indicate that Signal Sig-nal ll's oil rig in Pins Valley Val-ley Is now below the 5,000-foot 5,000-foot level, while the Loffland rig, which started making hole last Friday lntheRoos-evelt lntheRoos-evelt Springs KGRA is making mak-ing progress and laying casing cas-ing with each penetration. -0- In talking with Earth Sciences, Sci-ences, Inc., and BLM spokesmen, we're told that the environmental impact statement submitted to BLM late last year is still being considered by the regional office and has not yet been submitted to Washington, D. C. However, Lloyd Ferguson, Fergu-son, Fillmore District Manager Man-ager of BLM, said he expected ex-pected it to be ready by March. -0- This is one reason why It is so Important that reorganization reorgan-ization of BLM should not be accomplished at this time. While reorganization mayor may not be good for Beaver County, (the proposal would separate Beaver County from the Fillmore district and consolidate It with Cedar Ce-dar City district, while the rest of the Fillmore district would be merged with Richfield) Rich-field) certainly at this crucial cru-cial point in Beaver County's development, reorganization could cause costly delays. So, whether you support or oppose reorganization of BLM - we think you should at least register a protest of "Not Now!" Actually, we believe the whole reorganization reorgani-zation requires more study. Even those who attended the public hearings, when the proposal was announced, are not fully aware of what will be gained or lost. The proposal does not propose pro-pose to reduce staff, reduce costs, or any of the other usual governmental claims. There are no such claims -rather, the claims are simply sim-ply to reduce the number of Utah districts from eight to four and pull more staff from the outlying areas (they'll call them resource areas) Into the central offices. On the surface it appears to be another effort to make government gov-ernment more remote to the people. You have until Feb. 28th to register your comment com-ment - pro or con - to the BLM. -0- Bllls before the Utah legislature leg-islature have begun arriving at the News office. You're welcome to look them over in the office or take them home to study. We do urge you return re-turn them promptly so that others may also study them. This service Is provided by Rep. Washburn and the News. -0- A great ballgame Saturday between the Cedar Redmen and our Milford Tigers. Nearly as good as the advance ad-vance publicity by the media - including yours truly. Though both teams are touted for their ability at scoring, this game showed that both have excellent defense de-fense as well. Fan appreciation apprecia-tion was at Its highest. Approximately Ap-proximately 1700 saw the game and there was room for 2-300 more. We never heard anything but praise for both teams, with fans coming com-ing from all over. Even the referees were given the nod for a credible job - unusual for Milford. Both teams were tight - and neither played their best offensive of-fensive game - but there's a good chance neither will meet that strong a defense again this year. -0- We recommend the Milford Mil-ford City and South Milford Fire Dept. get off their high horse and settle down to working out their differences differenc-es - and the sooner the better. bet-ter. The old Are truck is good for nothing more than standby stand-by - unless fixed up. Unable to pump from a ditch, it is worthless on the flat unless fixed. The South Milford pumper, now on a new truck is ideal for most fires in or out of (Continued on Page 2) 4 station with all available fire fighters 10-20 miles away fighting another fire. -0- Together, we could have one of the best equipped volunteer vol-unteer departments In the state. Must we wait until some individual or property owner pays the big price, before we stop bickering over a couple of bucks and who gets to say how they are spent. And just as soon as these two work out their differences, differenc-es, they should work some kind of reciprocal agreement with Minersville. The time for shaking hands and agreeing agree-ing is now - not after the siren blows. -0- Reclassification didn't do much for Class A schools. In fact, if anything, it's worse. The Deseret News proposal by Lee Benson was the only one which would have benefited the small schools. That would have made the cut at 175 and made all four classifications about equal in number of teams. The new alignment puts 32 teams in the Class A division, while the 3-A and 4-A classifications classifica-tions could go with as low as 14 or 15 teams, depending on whether the borderline schools opt to go one way or the other. For our money, the new alignment stinks! -0- We'd also urge Region 8, which now has 10 teams in Class A , to cut their league schedule to a minumum of 10 games instead of the present pres-ent 18. There need be no fewer games scheduled, but would allow that there be more practice games. The present 18 -game league schedule with each team playing all other region re-gion Class A opponents on a home and home basis is too grueling and allows for little variation in schedules outside out-side of Region 8. The 10-game 10-game schedule would require that each team play at least five other Region 8 teams on a home and home basis in league play. For the rest of the season schedule, each team could opt to play other Region 8 teams in practice games or step outside Region 8 for stronger or different competition. Possibly sam-plying sam-plying other Regions which they must face later in Pro-vo. Pro-vo. It would also allow two or three practice games in the; early season, before league play gets underway. -0- Elsewhere in this issue is Information on ordering season sea-son tickets for the state tournaments. We urge everyone eve-ryone to go and support the Tigers and other Region 8 teams. We also urge you to en- close a request with your order. If you think all eight places in the state tourney deserve a" trophy to take home, say so. If you think the trophies should be presented pre-sented after the championship champion-ship game - we hope you'll mention that also. -0- In the past, trophies have only been presented to 1st, 2nd and consolation, teams. And these are not presented until the Awards Assembly at the close of the school year. We believe trophies should go to eight of the 16 teams who survive the tourney. We believe they should receive their trophy immediately, after the championship game, before the crowd of fans who saw them win it. We would also urge that the all -tourney team be picked pick-ed and recognized at that time. We believe itshouldbe the same in all classes. If you believe the same as we do -send a separate message or enclose it with your season sea-son ticket order to the Utah High School Activities Association, As-sociation, 2363 Foothill Dr., Suite D, Salt Lake City, Utah 84109. HERE'S MORE ABOUT JUST BETWEEN (Continued from Page One town. It's large capacity and ditch pumping facilities make It exceptionally good for grass and range fires. However, unless some sort of warning system is worked out, It seldom will get to a fire In time to be of much service. The new Milford truck, backed by the old truck and siren to call the department work on most fires, but we've seen a few in recent years we were glad the forest ser- vice truck and South Milford truck were able to back them up. -0- We think it's time the two groups quit their feuding and housed all three trucks in Milford with one warning system and one fire dept. Then we urge them to agree to send both new trucks to every fire, leaving the old , truck as standby, eliminating eliminat-ing the time consuming eenie, meenie mlny-moover which truck to take. If only one truck is needed - the fire chief can send the extra back to the station immediately. -0- We also believe there should be an auxiliary fire dept., composed of former firemen, who are well schooled in the mechanics of the old truck, who would answer ans-wer only a second call with the standby truck, If two fires should occur at the same time. It's ridiculous to have the new truck setting in the |
