Show CANDIDATE r 1 I 4 1 -Ml "i Mitch Melich MITCH MELICH FILES FOR GOVERNOR BID Mitch Melich, Republican candidate for Governor of Utah told Lincoln Day audiences this week, "If we in the States fail in our responsibilities then I predict that the Federal Welfare States will continue to grow and usurp more and more the powers of the states. For if the states fail to meet some of the urgent needs of their people, assistance of some type, no doubt, will come out of Washington." Mr. Melich addressed groups in Nephi and Cedar City and is currently organizing his statewide campaign. He is the first declared candidate for either party in the 1964 races. In reflecting on the contributions contri-butions of President Lincoln and declaring his position he said, "First, a government which remains close to its own people governs the best. Second, Sec-ond, no type of government can survive without an aroused and dedicated public. The gubernatorial candidate has practiced law in since 1936. He is a directoi of several major companies, member of the Board of Re. gents of the University of Utah and served two terms in the State Senate. He was prej. dent of the Utah Mining Association Asso-ciation in 1963. When he announced his can-dMacy can-dMacy in January, Mr. Melich said, "The state has had its greatest growth and expansion during the past 15 years under a continuous Republican administration. ad-ministration. I am proud to have had some part in state activities during this time. "The years ahead offer us still greater goals within which to expand the educational, cultural cul-tural and economic interests of our people. It is toward the accomplishments of these goals that I shall strive as governor. I will not stand still. I will pursue a positive program based on progress and responsibility. And, I pledge to the people of Utah an administration ad-ministration which will be efficient, ef-ficient, honest, understanding and financially sound." |
