Show I AROUND OUR iHVilil'"- : '- By GRANT ESPLIN Beaver County Agent Ralph Pearson of Minersville was showing me his grain silage the other day. This silage is made out of chopped barley This silage was very well cured, and had a good smell to it, Ralph thinks this is the best way to harvest grain on the farm. It uses all the straw and any weeds that are present. Mr. Pearson is convinced that it is a better feed and more di-gestable di-gestable than barley hay. The calves and cows recieving this feed were doing well. When putting put-ting in this silage he packed it very well getting out all air. Any air that remains in the silage will cause it to spoil. Dr. Staples, Federal Veter-inanary Veter-inanary from Kanosh stopped in the other day on his way to Minersville and we had quite a discussion about the brucellosis brucel-losis control program and about getting Beaver County accredited accred-ited as a modified Brucellosis flee area. Most of the dairy cattle in the county are tested by ring test couple of times eac' vear and thf infeoion among the dairy cattle has been reduced to such a low point that Beaver County could be accredited so far as they are concerned. We need to get enough of the beef cattle in the county I tested to know how they stand, i Woods and Eyres in Minersville tested 70 cows in Pine Valley ! -with no reactore. Wintches at Wah Wah tested their cows with no reactores. I If we can get the County ' accredited it will simplify the j movement of cattle from county ( to county, out of state and from one herd to another. I ! To become accredited a test would have to be run where less than 1 of cattle were infected in-fected and not over 5 of the herdJ. Dr. Staples, informs me that Millard County producers are testing their beef herds. It looks like they may be accredited accred-ited within the year. Also that ! Iron County is working toward it. where someone is doing b,is ' own slaughtering for his own use will now be inspected for freedom from disease. Dr. Wendell Brooksby of Cedar : City will be in charge, of meat I inspection from this area and a locM tecllnician will be i hired to work under Dr. Brooksby's supervision in Bea-I Bea-I ver. This meat inspection comes as a. result of a law passed by the 1955 Utah Legislature and i has not been enforced unt;il i the present to give slaughter j houses time to comply. |
