Show . Hundred Tons Of Carrots Shipped To Northern Canneries One-hundred tons of carrots were shipped from this district to canneries at Ephraim and I Ogden this year according to W,m. Whitehead, field agent for the Rocky Mountain Packing Corp-I Corp-I oration at Ogden and the Utah- California Piacking corporation ' at Ephraim. The carrots were used in a new canning process which combines I carrots and peas. Due to the fact that carrotts in the northern ! part of the state were not ma- itured sufficiently to pay to use, the canneries came into this district dis-trict and bought up the available supply here, Mr. Whitehead said. Ten dollars per ton were paid to the farmers and local truckers were paid six dollars a ton to Ephraim and ten to Ogden making mak-ing an additional sum of money I to come to this section from this source. Cash Crop At the present basis paid local farmers were able to cash in for ! from $2-50. to $300. per acre. ! This amount could be greatly ! increased by better production, state those who have looked into I the matter. Carrot producers have I grown as high as fourty-ton to the acre. I The companies have offered to 'contract for from 400 to 500 'tons for next year. Mr. Whitehead White-head said. On this basis this j will make another fine cash crop for Dixie farmers. (Not only were the local carrots larger and more matured than the northern ones but they had a better color and taste. |
