Show Orval Hafen Presents Sunday Nite Book Review Attorney Orval Hafen offered a new angle in the book review at the Sunday night library hour. His desire, he said, was not so much to give the full text of the book, "Andrew Jackson" by Marius James, but to give enough that those who have not done so, will desire to read this most interesting biography of a nation-I nation-I ally famous man. Mr. Hafen explained that there have been numerous biographies begun and written of "Old Hickory", as this fiery, two-fisted military general and later United States President, was known, but this by Mr. James, written first in two volumes and later in one large book, is outstanding. Seven years in the making and brimming brim-ming with vital incidents, the author pays tribute to his wife, also a writer, for her help. He won the 1938 Pulitzer prize with this biography. The life of Andrew Jackson was one of constant struggles, both in his military work and in his entire political career. Strong minded, clear-sighted, alert, bristling with determination, he fought for his country, his ideals, the honor of his wife, with equal fervor. His activities in the battle of New Orleans, the taking of Florida, his interest in horse racing, and his firm stand for the rights of men, which won him the title of "Old Hickorty",- predominate the story. That a person may have detracted from the strict codes was no barrier to him if he counted them as friends. Interesting Interest-ing to read of are his duels on behalf of his wife, his judgement of horses and love for racing; the fervor of his friendships; his procedure pro-cedure in collecting the debt from France; his handling of the Banking Bank-ing system, and his problems with his son, Andrew Jackson Jr. Varying' from wealth to submersion sub-mersion in debts, he never lost his rich capacity to lead. Whatever What-ever he did was done with excellence, ex-cellence, from parties and entertainment enter-tainment to the affairs of government. govern-ment. For these sterling qualities, people loved him. The next review is to be given April 8, by Dr. L. W. McGregor, the subject to be announced later. |
