Show Hurricane Peach Day Celebration Has Record Crowds Both Days HURRICANE, Utah The second day of Hurricane's annual Peach Day celebration, Thursday, Aug. 24, saw an even larger crowd than the first day, which was proclaimed pro-claimed "large and enthusiastic" by those in attendance. The chief event of the morning was the public meeting with Mayor E. Wadsworth giving the address of welcome. Sports events in the forenoon included a baseball game between Beaver and LaVerkin and a game between the Fremont girls team and the Hurricane girls. The day was climaxed by a large parade featuring floats representing represent-ing various business firms and organizations. Cedar City horsemen horse-men and 30 of the St. George Lions on their horses added to the beauty of the parade. This was followed by the customary fruit feast and the fight card and dance in the evening. The morning program was under the direction of Mrs. Katharine Larson, Mrs. Anna Hirschi and Mrs. Grace Staheli. Chauncey C. Sandberg introduced the speakers and musical numbers with a band selection being the opening number. Other musical numbers included a song by the Ladies' Chorus, ovcal solo, Mrs. Lillian Workman; a piano duet, by Mrs. Vernon Campbell and Mrs. P. Wilson, numbers by the Dixie Quartet and a solo by Dil-worth Dil-worth M. Snow. Speakers included Mayor Wadsworth, Otto Fife and Dilworth Snow. Cedar tWins In the main sports event of the afternoon, Cedar City nosed out St. George by a score of 5-6. St. George had beaten La Verkin on the previous day and Cedar City had won from Beaver. Outstanding Parade The parade was led by the Hurricane high school band and featured the Peach Day Queen, Miss Enid Bradshaw, and the Cedar City and St. George Rodeo Queens. This group was followed by the horsemen. Floats were entered by the Ace Casino's. Judd's Mercantile, Sand-berg's Sand-berg's Mercantile. Stevens Motor company, Webb Flour Mill, Gene Wadsworth and a comedy float deriding the business houses who did not enter floats. The fights were all called draws with the exception of the bout between Ben Bundy of Bundy-ville Bundy-ville and Beatty of Las Vegas. Bundy won by a knockout punch in the second round. |
