Show UTAH ASKS AID FOR FOREST ROADS Further stress was laid Tuesday on the importance of increasing federal appropriations for construction of highways through forest reserves by Henry H. Blood, chairman of the state road commission and president of the Western association of state highway officials. Appeals were sent out to the highway high-way departments of all western states asking them to immediately petition their congressional delegations for greater financial support of the forest highway program. Mr. Blood advocates in these messages mes-sages that the appropriation contained contain-ed in the agricultural bill be increased from $6,500,000 to $9,000,000 and that congressional delegations also be asked to line up behind early action on the Colton bill which would appropriate $3,500,000 annually for the next three years to be used in building roads in the public land states over publicly owned lands. Conservative figures compiled show that $174,334,000 will be required to build the forest highways to first stage a gravel surface construction and it will thus be seen, said Mr. Blood that nearly 46 years would be required to improve this forest highway system. Under present budgets Utah receives annually $172,562 to be alloted on some 757 miles of forest highways. It is estimated that $4,673,000 will be needed need-ed to build these roads to first stage-construction stage-construction said Mr. Blood. |
