Show DIXIE WINNER IN BOULDER DEBATE Dixie debaters received the decision in the debate with B. A. C. which was held at the college Wednesday. The question was "Should Congress Pass the Swing-Johnson Bill?" This bill provides for a government-built dam across the Colorado river at Boulder canyon. Two debates were held during the day. In the morning Wayne Hinton and Louis Palmer of the B. A. C. upheld up-held the affirmative and Eleanor Isom and Maurice Miles of Dixie the negative. nega-tive. f In the afternoon the debate was continued con-tinued with Dixie upholding tire affirmative af-firmative and B. A. C. the negative. Bessie Atkin and Roland Stucki represented rep-resented Dixie and Rex Harris and Fay Parker for Cedar. Dr. Herbert B. Maw, director of the public speaking department at the University of Utah, acted as judge, and after hearing both debates, he criticized the speakers, bringing out weak points and giving suggestions. He then gave his decision which favored favor-ed the negative in the morning and the affirmative in the afternoon, making mak-ing Dixie winner. He judged the debates on the following: follow-ing: Who had the fundamental issues of the debates? Did one side bring out insignificant points? Were all potential issues included? Which side better supported its statements with proof? Mere statements do not prove. Absolute evidence is necessary.- Which side departed from prepared or memorized speeches and brought out points against the statements of his apponents? Who had the better coherence and unity? |
