Show CATTLE DISEASE ONDECREASE Out of Total of 1926 Cows Tested Test-ed for Tuberculosis to Date But 37 Reactors Taken Out That tuberculosis among the dairy-cattle dairy-cattle in Washington county is decreasing, de-creasing, is shown in a report from Dr. A. C. Johnson, deputy state veterinarian, veterin-arian, who for the past three weeks has been testing cattle in this county. Cattle at New Harmony, Enterprise, . Veyo, Gunlock and Central are yet to be tested, but the rest of the comity has been tested thoroughly. Out of a total of 1926 cows, 37 reactors were found, which is a very small percentage, per-centage, and far below the average for the rest of the country. Santa Clara is the only town so far tested that has shown an increase in the number of reactors. Three years ago veterinarians took out 11 head of recators from that town, while last year no trace of disease was found. This year, however, a number of reactors were found so there is evidently a source of infection there which has not been uncovered. Several towns in Washington county have passed two tests without a reactor showing up. This is very gratifying as it is absolutely ab-solutely necessary that we have clean, tubercular-free cows for milk production. produc-tion. Reactors are killed under the supervision super-vision of government veterinarians, and as much of them as possible salvaged and the salvage money is paid direct to the owners of the condemned stock. It is absolutely imperative for the owners of reactor cows to thoroughly clean and disinfect their premises before be-fore they receive their indemnity. To aid in the elimination of this dread disease it is necessary that all corrals and barns be clean at all times, and it will also help to spray the corrals and stables once a month with some stock dip. This is a cheap preventive and is easily applied. However the best preventive pre-ventive against tuberculosis gaining a foothold is to keep the premises clean. |
