Show JAPAN SEEKING LARGE MURINE ADMIRAL SAITO WANTS AMOUNT EQUAL TO U. S. AND GREAT BRITAIN Declares Type of Boat Necessary to Patrol Long Empire Stretches Geneva, Switzerland Having lost her battle for the right to build an unlimited un-limited number of small subarines "the wasps that sting" Japan now has put forward a demand for a considerably con-siderably increased total tonnage of submarines, for the construction of which she asks authorization under the projected tripartite naval treaty. Only private conferences took place, but a formal meeting of the delegations delega-tions has been called. The American delegation proposed to the conference that the submarine tonnage for the United Slates and Great Britain be fixed at from 60,000 to 00.000 and that of Japan from 26,-OuO 26,-OuO to 54.0u0. Admiral S.iito says he wants 70.000 tons of submarines for Nirpon because be-cause of the long stretches of Japan's isiand empire and the necessity of defending de-fending the coast against invading warships. Jaran therefore asks 34.-000 34.-000 more tons than contained in the American minimum proposal, and is clearly seeking a higher proportion of submarines than the 5-5-3 ratio established estab-lished at Washington for capital ships. This demand will be taken as a basis in the discussion of the submarine sub-marine qusetion. and presumably Japan Jap-an will be given some satisfaction in this direction. |
