Show UTAH SURE OF OIL LAND COMMISSIONER SPRY SAYS Commissioner William Spry of the U. S. public land office, Washington, is confident that oil will be produced in Utah in commercial quantities. He expressed that opinion at his temporary tem-porary headquarters at the Hotel Utah Thursday. Commissioner Spry expressed regret that there had been such disappointment disappoint-ment here in regard to the production of oil on the permits that had been issued is-sued in Utah, and he said the department depart-ment wishes to be generous to the holders hold-ers of the permits. He declared that if reasonable cause may be shown why an extension of time should be granted on the permits, the extension will be granted. grant-ed. The department is willing to do anything any-thing in its power to promote the production pro-duction of oil in Utah, for, said the commissioner, this state probably needs the oil more than does any other state, for the income therefrom would be of great benefit, he said, referring to the $3,000,00 allotment to the state of Wyoming from its oil fields. Oil will be produced here, he repeated, repeat-ed, although it may be difficult and expensive ex-pensive to obtain. Commissioner Spry said the bill prepared pre-pared by the department of the interior inter-ior relating to school lands is working out admirably, and he said as fast as the lands can be surveyed they are being be-ing turned over to the states. Utah, Arizona and New Mexico are the only states in the union that have sections in every township to be surveyed, sur-veyed, and this year more surveying is being done on school lands in Utah than on any other state, he said. The government is spending $1,000,000 a year in the nation for this survey and now has 100 surveying parties employed. employ-ed. Commissioner and Mrs. Spry will leave here this evening for Cedar City and a tour of Zion Park. Mr. Spry desires de-sires especially to see the new roads he has heard much about there. Later he plans visits to the Uinta basin, Wyoming Wyom-ing and Pacific northwest, and a trip to San Francisco. Deseret News. |
