Show START WORK ON HEW BUILDING Hail, Ahlstrom and McComb on Tuesday started construction of a two st0ry business building on their property prop-erty on the former site of the White Front Cafe. The basement for the heating plant has been excavated the forms for the concrete foundations are being placed. All material for, the new structure has been ordered and is now on the road. Construction will ne pushed and it is expected the building build-ing will be ready for occupancy within six or seven weeks. The building will be 56 feet by 80 feet and two stories in height. The lower floor will be divided into three compartments, one of which will be occupied by the White Front Cafe, which is owned by these men. The other two compartments will be used by other business firms. On the upper floor there will be but one big room which will be furnished and used as a dance hall and for other social gatherings. Chester Kemp is overseeing the construction con-struction work on this building. Accommodations for the" increasing tourist travel through St. George is given as one of the reasons for this improvement. It is estimated that over 100 people are passing through St. George every day on the stages alone, not taking into consideration the private cars. Of this number it is estimated the Pickwick people carry seventy-five daily. The White Front is the local agent for the Pickwick, which is operating two stages each way daily. Two men are on hand here at all times to inspect and service the stages when they arrive, and the ! 1 1 brakes and general mechanical con-'' con-'' I dition of the stage is gone over . thoroughly the same as on the modern train. This work was formerly done in Cedar City and Las Vegas but the service department was recently moved mov-ed to St. George. This means that passengers will be given a longer per-ior per-ior of time here which will prove an indirect benefit to all. Tourist travel is at its lowest point at the present time but within six weeks is expected to begin in earnest. |
