Show ROMNEYNAMED ALL-AMERICAN HOOP fORWARD B. Y. U. Star Picked from Hundreds as Running Mate for California Ace; First Utahn Since 19 16 The Ail-American Board of basketball, which is made up of outstanding coaches of universities uni-versities all over the nation, has selected Elwood Romney, B. Y. U. forward, as a team mate for Richard Linthicum, University of California, on the mythical all-American all-American aggregation for 1932. Center of the squad is Ed Krause, Notre Dame, and the guards are John Wrooden, Purdue, Pur-due, and Lewis Berger, Maryland. Mary-land. The naming of Romney on this aggregation is an unusual distinction dis-tinction in that he is the first Utah man since 1916 to place on an all-Amerian team from a Utah team. Since picking an ail-American team has been done yearly, five Utah men have been placed, two from Salt Lake before be-fore 1916, and the other three from southern Utah, "Huzzy" Ward of Parowan, "Cat" Thompson Thomp-son of La Verkin, and Romney. The latter two received their first experience at Dixie high school and college. However, Wrard and Thompson both placed plac-ed on the all-American from Montana. Romney was the unanimous choice of the seven judges. He is the only man in the state who has been for three years an all-state captain, placed two consecutive years on the Rocky Mountain conference team, and once on the all-American. Regarding the selections, the Salt Lake Tribune says: "The first player, above all, is John Wooden of Purdue. If the most brilliant amateur basketball player in the country were to be selected, the name of John Wooden outshines all others. This boy is a s-enior, weighs ISO pounds and can do anything with a absketball that anybody else can do and has a number of amazing tricks of his own. Wooden broke the western conference con-ference scoring record this year and is the unanimous choice of every critic who has seen him, for the honor team. "The other guard position is filled by Lewis Berger, University Univer-sity of Maryland, a remarkable all-around player who does everything ev-erything well, stands 6 feet 3 and weighs 135 pounds. "The two forward positions would go to Elwood Romney of B. Y. U. and Richard Linthicum of the University of Califoriji:".. Los Angeles branch. "Romney is a senior, 2 0 yea: -of age and a leading scorer in the Rocky Mountain region for the past two years. He is a player of great individual brilliance. bril-liance.
