Show REMAINS OF PREHISTORIC MJOUND Archeologist, After 2 Months' Work, Uncovers Skeleton Beneath Cliff Dwellers Cave in Tuweep Valley An almost intact skeleton of a prehistoric man has been found by Dr. L. F. LeBaron, an archeologist ar-cheologist who has been working work-ing in the Tuweep section for the past two months. The discovery dis-covery was made near the Marcel Mar-cel Schmutz ranch. The remains are almost intact, only a bone in the right leg and one in the right arm are missing, and are estimated by Dr. LeBaron to be 1 those of a man who lived about 10,000 years ago, before the time of the cliff dwellers. This opinion is based on the fact that the bones were found buried four feet under ground in a cave which was later in-I in-I habited by the cliff dwellers. This cave is under a high ledge and is divided into five compartments, com-partments, and it was under the floor L-f one of these compart- ments that the find was made, j According to those who have ! seen the skeleton, it is that of i an infptliVpni- man. with a fore head and skull of similar shape to that of man today. They are not, according to Dr. LeBaron, (Continued on page 2) REMALNS (Continued from page 1) the remains' of an Indian. The skull was intact. Some of the bones had fallen apart, but the man still gripped a knife handle han-dle in his right hand. The blade had been broken off. That the man had lain in his tomb for many centuries is indicated in-dicated by the fact that wearing wear-ing apparel in various stages of preservation, and of the kind worn by people of widely separated sepa-rated generations, were found under the floor of the cave and over the grave. Corn cobs, beads and other articles of the early inhabitants of this country were also found. Dr LeBaron, who has had considerable experience in excavating exca-vating for prehistoric relics, considers con-siders this find one of the most important he has ever made, and invites anyone interested to visit the site Sunday. A car may be driven to within two hundred yards of the cave. The distance from St. Georg.e is about 80 miles. |
