Mike Malaska grabbed the leadership leader-ship in the Eastern Utah Petroleum Invitational In-vitational Golf Classic due to a 68 score on Saturday and Brad Stone and Steve LaDonne tied for second best scores, Saturday at 70. Chip Garris and Reid Goodliffe recorded 71 tallies. Malaska, Stone, LaDonne and Garris were plac-; plac-; ed in the foursome at the number one tee, Sunday and this reporter decided ( that there was a good chance that the i winner would emerge from the group and I was right as LaDonne emerged as the winner, but he had a rough time reaching his goal. Malaska had a two stroke lead, but be ran into trouble on number one as be bogeyed the par three hole and a birdie by Ladonne enabled him to tie , .Malaska for the lead at 3 under. Garris Gar-ris also produced a birdie. The tee-shot by Malaska was far right of the green and in the rough next toa fence behind the number nine tee. The other golfers placed their balls on 4e number one green. Malaska just missed on a birdie attempt, but Garris Gar-ris and LaDonne did not miss. A birdie by Malaska placed him ce again at 4 under, but an eagle to by Stone tied up the battle for first place. Garris gained a birdie as wll, but LaDonne parred the hole to at 3 under on the number two We. Stone's shot was on the right side of le fairway and he placed his ball on w green on his second shot. Stone put nice shot for an eagle and Malaska Pped a shot through the cup for a Wie. LaDonne's shot at a birdie rolls' roll-s' by the cup. Malaska gained a one stroke lead er Stone at -5 to -4 on a birdie on the lumber three hole and the lead stayed same as all four golfers parred mber four. Malaska lost the lead for good on the number nine hole as he bogeyed the par three hole to drop to -4 and LaDonne stayed at -5 due a par. All four golfers failed to put the ball on the number nine green. Malaska's second shot hit the green, but rolled completely complete-ly off it. LaDonne put in a long shot for par, but Malaska was short of the cup and finished with a bogey. Garris turned turn-ed in an outstanding chip shot as he put the ball close to the hole and gained a par. All four golfers gained par threes on number one, but a birdie four on number two gave LaDonne a two stroke lead of -6 to -4 over Malaska. LaDonne was in trouble as his tee shot almost joined the cows over the fence. However, LaDonne's shot stayed in bounds and landed on top of a bump a few feet away from the fence. LaDonne was over the green just a bit on the second shot and put the ball on the green with his third shot. The fourth shot dropped through the hole for a birdie. A car was going down the road and Garris kept waiting for the car to pass by before he teed off on the second hole. All of a sudden he heard nothing and he backed up and didn't tee off. The car stopped to wait for Garris to tee off and that's why Garris didn't hear any noise. He returned to the tee and turned in a good shot and dropped a 10 foot shot for an eagle. LaDonne gained a birdie on number three to take a four stroke lead of -7 to -3 over Malaska. Malaska bogeyed the hole to drop to -3 with Stone and Garris. Gar-ris. LaDonne's third shot landed close to the pin and he dropped the fourth shot for a birdie. Malaska was inches short and bogeyed the hole. Garris, Malaska, LaDonne and Stone gained pars on the number four hole and a bogey by Malaska dropped him to 2 under on number five and LaDonne parred the hole to stay at 7 under. Pars by Stone and Garris kept the two golfers at 3 under par. LaDonne placed him back on the green on his second shot and placed the ball on the edge of the cup on his third shot. He tapped the ball in for a par four. The world of golf was going great for LaDonne, but he had a rough time on three of the final four holes of regulation. regula-tion. LaDonne's shot ended up in the number eight fairway, but he placed his second shot on the green. However, the tournament ended in a tie as LaDonne double bogeyed the final hole to drop into a first place tie with Stone at 3 under par. Stone put his shot on the green, but LaDonne was off the green on his tee shot and to the right. LaDonne's second se-cond shot rolled off the green to the left and Stone was just short on a birdie attempt. at-tempt. Stone gained a par three on the hole. LaDonne was long on his chip shot and missed by a couple of inches of knocking the ball in for a bogey. Ladonne tapped the ball in for a double dou-ble bogey and the first place battle was still on as LaDonne and Stone were tied for the top honor. I had planned on only following golfers around for just 18 holes of golf, but I was forced to go 19 holes. The first hole of sudden death for Stone and LaDonne was number one. Stone's tee shot was off to the right next to a fence, which protects golfers on the number nine tee. LaDonne's tee shot was off the green just to the right. Stone's second shot landed within four feet of the cup and LaDonne placed his ball three feet way from the cup. Stone's shot at par was short and off to the left, and the winner was decided by LaDonne as he dropped a three-foot putt in the cup to capture first place in the Eastern Utah Petroleum Invitational Golf Classic. |
