Show Roosevelv downs The game was tied at 3-3 after five complete innings of action, but the deadlock was cracked with the swing of a bat by Pete Jones as he sent the ball over the fence for a three run homer in the top of the sixth inning to guide the Roosevelt team to an 8 to 3 District Pony League Tournament win over the Vernal A team, Saturday in Roosevelt. Roosevelt went down one, two, three in the top of the first inning on strike outs by Greg Jaramillo, but Vernal gained a runner in the bottom of the first inning as Todd Shiner singled with two outs. He stole second base, but Brett Weldon struck out to end the inning. The Roosevelt crew jumped out to a 2- 0 lead in the top of the second inning. Bryan Ross singled and Tommy Olsen was hit by the pitcher. Ross was tagged tagg-ed out as he tried to advance to third base due to a good throw by Tommy Winters and Skeeter Kroeplin netted a single. Vernal faked a throw to third base with Olsen on the bag and then tossed the ball to second base, but it wasn't in time to nail Kroeplin. Jones gained a single when his base hit dropped drop-ped between three fielders and Olsen scored to give Roosevelt a 1-0 lead. Kroeplin scored to present a 2-0 lead to Roosevelt when the throw to first on a hit by Bobby Riding was low. Whitey Crozier flied out for the final out of the inning. Vernal had three base runners in the bottom of the second inning, but all three failed to score. Vernal went down in order in the bottom of the fourth inning and Roosevelt was blanked one, two, three in the top of the fifth inning. Three of Vernal's batters in the bottom bot-tom of the fifth inning struck out, but Roosevelt's pitcher, Riding was hurt by a walk, balk, steal and wild pitch. Schiller was walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Schiller scored on a balk to tie up the game at 3- 3. Olsen and Jeff Hanberg led off with singles in the top of the sixth inning and then Jones delivered the mighty blow as he blasted the baseball over the centerfield fence to place Roosevelt three runs ahead at 6-3. Crozier grounded out. The next batter failed to deliver a bunt on a suicide squeeze play, but Riding scored anyway as he crashed into the catcher and knocked the ball out of his mitt. Vernal's A team scored one run in the bottom of the first inning on a counter by Schiller to cut the B team lead to one run at 2-1. Vernal's A team was beaten by Roosevelt, 5 to 4, July 19 and beat South Sevier, 22 to 0, July 20. Roosevelt grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a run by Lynn Abplanalp, but Vernal tied up the game at 1-1 on a run by Bart Taylor in the fourth. Jaramillo and David Murphy singled in the inning. The Roosevelt team grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Copeland got on the bases on an error and scored on a homer with two outs by Bobby Riding. The Vernal team scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie up the game at 3-3.
