I About 60 people over 70 years old attended at-tended the dinner. One of the older persons attending theannual event, Vella Smith, 92, said she enjoyed relating pioneer history by giving the lesson for 24 years for the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. "The happiest day of my life," Mrs. Smith said reflecting back, "was the day I was married." Mrs. Smith also said she enjoyed leaching school many of her students were also at the dinner. 1 Elvira Slaugh was another at the , dinner. She spent most of her life in Vernal on a farm. She said she remembers bunching wild hay and helping stack it. "When a pet deer herded us into the ' toilet (outhouse) and wouldn't let us . t," Mrs. Slaugh said was the fun-, fun-, niest day of her life. She used to make a lot of quilts and cheese she sold in Vernal. Her children are now scat- tered all over. Les Thacker, 85, is known for his - wood stoves he builds from iron. He , tame to Vernal when he was 19 in 1917. 4 "I used to do a lot of singing," backer said. He took part in two Iras in high school. After a short program the 60 senior citizens at the dinner filled out a little bit fuller around the belt and spirited by recognition for their efforts in building Uintah even though their parts may have been small. |
