Now that we've waxed eloquent elo-quent on the Year's Best, the Year's Worst and the Academy Awards Predictions, Predic-tions, let's think about the devoted reader of this column who just doesn't go to the movies. He doesn't go, because so many films turn out to be stinkers, and even the good ones are trashy in places. "I don't go to the movies," they tell me, "but I went to see 'Man From Snowy River' because of what you said about it." Yes, Virginia, there are good movies that are so good you still feel warm the morning after; and you might even get a lump in your throat a week later. Here is our list of totally worthwhile and uplifting films. All are first-rate productions. pro-ductions. These are the "must-sees" for even the most critical filmgoer. Best of all, you haven't missed them, really, because either they haven't arrived yet in town, or they will likely be repeated in the next few months. GANDHI The great Mahatma's life from 1893 to 1948. It teaches that one good man can change the world. It contains rare mild profanity; appropriate, restrained violence. THE CHOSEN Two Jewish boys in N.Y. in the 1940's, their fathers, their friendships, their differences. It teaches brotherhood and parental love and respect. Offensive content, none. BEYOND THE NEXT MOUNTAIN Results of efforts of a missionary to India. It teaches that one good man can change a nation. Offensive content, none. CHARIOTS OF FIRE (1981) Two great runners in the 1924 Olympics. It teaches to be true to God and to yourself. 2-3 mild cuss words. The above films are boring for kids. Those listed below are for all the family. E.T. Creature from another world befriended by 10-year old boy. It teaches that children are more trusting than adults ; love is better than fear. Contains a little mild profanity. THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER Boy becomes a man in outback out-back Australia. It teaches to persevere, love and be brave. Contains one strong expletive and mild profanity. THE DARK CRYSTAL Parable of good and evil. It teaches that good overcomes over-comes evil. Contains puppet violence. NIGHT CROSSING (1981) True story of family who escape East Germany Ger-many in homemade balloon. It teaches courage and freedom. Contains a little mild profanity. SECRET OF NIMH Home of field mice threatened by farmer's plow. It teaches love for tiny creatures. Offensive content, none. |
