It was sponsored hy the Maeser Stake Relief Society. 1 Hmiths and displays pertaining to ways of being more self sufficient were set up throughout the Maeser Stake Center. They were set up hy the ' various wards of the stake along w ilh a few commercial displays. A commercial display was set up giving homemade gift ideas The Cihnes First Ward set up a wood stove demonstration and information booth as well as a home remedies booth A handout was given on some of the home remedies Some of these included includ-ed hints on sore throat, croupe, conges-lion, conges-lion, migrain headaches and many others Another commercial display was set up by Magic Pantry The Cilines Second Ward set up a display on children's toys and how to make them. The Ashley Second Ward had a display on sewing and how to make your own rugs Mildred Mansfield from the Maeser Second Ward showed how to grow your own seed She also gave tips on better gardening as well as gave out carrot seed and garlic plants Ixmesa Hacking from the Maeser Second Ward gave tips on making your own cleaning supplies. "I think it is what people really need." she said "I've used them The initial cost might to a little much, but once you get them, you use them for a long time " One of the recipes on the handout Mrs Hacking gave out was the (,.: H.m- h il J Cear.er. Ann Mcrkley. along w ith Joe Calder assisting, from the Maeser First Ward, taught the people how to raise honey in their own back yard. "They reaily don't sting very often." said Mrs. Merkley. "You should only work on them on still sunny days." Dean and Ann Merkley raise their own honey in their back yard. A 72-hour emergency kit w as set up by the Maeser Fourth Ward. The list given out included immediately available emergency needs, sanitation kit. stress factors, car, food, security Sufficiency Fair Saturday, April 30. She has been using these supplies for many years. She also shares food and standard first aid kit lists. The Ashley First Ward set up a home nursing and basic sewing display. The Ghnes First Ward taught the people about wheat cooking. "The whole demonstration is in trying to get the people to get their wheat out on their cans and into their stomaches," said Gina Anderson. She gave six basic w ays to use it every day. One of the recipes she gave was a pancake recipe. Pancakes V2 cups sifted whole wheat flour 1 tbsp. baking powder 3j tsp. salt 3 tbsp. sugar 2 egg yolks 12 cups milk 3 tbsp. oil 2 egg whites, beaten Combine in order given. Folding in egg whites last. Bake on hot lightly greased griddle. The Glines Third Ward set up displays on emergency lighting and beauty preparations. Financial Resources was displayed by the Maeser Fourth Ward. How to make your own soap was shown by Maeser B'irst Ward. Ashley Second Ward set up a display on sugarless canning. The Glines Fourth Ward's demonstration was on prepared mixes. Some of these included basic biscuit mix, whole wheat biscuit mix, cookie mix, and basic cake mix. Dutch John also had a display on sausage making. Workshops were also held throughout the building such as self control, fashion jeans, shoe repairing, furniture refinishing, and green house growing. A fashion show under the direction of Barbara Haslem was presented at 2:30 p.m. The models showed outfits which had been made over and recycled as well as other homemade outfits which are in style today. "It's kind of been a slow steady crowd since 10 o'clock, " said Thelma Thacker, welfare board member of the stake relief society through the Maeser Stake. Last year the self-sufficiency fair was held within the individual wards This year it was on a stake basis. Each of the wards were assigned to do as many displays as they wanted. Some a handout with directions and an explanation explana-tion of how to do this for the people to keep. did one or two w hile others did three or four. LaRae Perry, stake Relief Society-president Society-president of Maeser Stake, and Thelma Thacker worked together organizing the fair. "People have really shown an interest in-terest in self-reliance and being self-sufficient self-sufficient and found a lot of help to do this." said Mrs. Thacker. i ' ' 1 i .
