Show Forest Service jobs program to benefit area unemployed Ashley National Forest will receive $400,000 from the federal government as part of a program to put unemployed people back to work. The money is part of more than $8 million appropriated which will begin flowing to unemployed workers and private contractors in the Forest Service Ser-vice Intermountain Region this summer sum-mer as a result of the national Jobs Bill signed into law by President Reagan on March 24. That amount is earmarked earmark-ed for specific projects to be done by 16 National Forests located in Utah, Nevada, southern Idaho and western Wyoming. Regional Forester Stan Tixier stressed that the Forest Service will not hire employees directly, but will accomplish the work through contractual contrac-tual arrangements with individuals and businesses. Anyone with 'ap propriate skills may bid on these contracts. Work to be done on National Forest lands under this program will include site preparation for tree planting, timber stand improvement, trail maintenance, road maintenance, facility maintenance, and reconstruction reconstruc-tion of recreation facilities. Inquiries about contracts under the jobs program should be directed to the nearest Forest headquarters office. Some of this work will be funded through Sept. 30, 1383. Other projects will last through September of 1984. Total funding for projects on Na- tional Forests across the country is 185 million. It is to be spent in a way that will channel nearly all of the money to workers and the private contractors who hire them. Several other areas in Utah will also benefit from the program. Dixie National Na-tional Forest will receive $624,000,' Fishlake National Forest $344,000, Manti-LaSal National Forest $483,000, Uinta National Forest $175,000 and Wasatch National Forest $1,134,000, making Utah's total share $3,160,000. |
