Show Vernal gets award for progress Vernal City placed third in the eastern naif of Utah in community progress and nas given $150 prize money during a rief presentation Wednesday. Wesley T. Maughn, supervisor of Com-nunity Com-nunity Development Programs, Utah state University, and Jeri Winger, community com-munity development specialist, Presented the award to City Manager ienneth Bassett and Pam Beyers, city ecreation director. Projects submitted to Utah State University's community development program were judged on planning, people peo-ple involved, economy, environment and service, said Maughn. The projects submitted by VernalCi-ty VernalCi-ty that received the award were the city park near the Colton Pavilion, Indepen-ient Indepen-ient Park, near Vernal Junior High, and the lighting of the Ashley field at the Ver-' nal baseball complex. City Manager Basset said that one of the areas of need in the community, identified iden-tified by a survey by Utah State University, Univer-sity, was for more parks, especially catering to smaller children. Through community involvement, mmerous businesses donating time and naterials, and city funds the three parks vere built. "Vernal should be proud of their ac-:omplishments ac-:omplishments in this area," Maughan aid.
