Throughout the State of Utah, the week of April 25 through April 30 has been designated as the week for this year's Festival of the Arts. "It involved all of the area schools. It's done as a district-wide program," said Garlyn Saupe, publicity. "It's all over the State of Utah." The Utah State Board of Education sponsors the Festival of the Arts. Playing Play-ing selections from "E.T." and "The Wonderful World of Disney" were among their numbers performed that evening. have the opportunity to participate during dur-ing this week. "Ninety-eight percent of the school districts in the state participate in this," said Mrs. Saupe. It included 300,000 people. The Uintah School District instituted the program in 1976. The program throughout the state has been underway since 1971. Rhoda DeVed, community schools coordinator, said, "The state office encourages en-courages all districts to institute this program." The first one in 1976 was a pageant and a musical in celebration of the bicentennial. The theme for the festival comes from the state office. This year's theme has been "Arts For a Special You." The schools are encouraged to use this theme. Mrs. Saupe said Mrs. DeVed set up a meeting time for representatives from all of the schools in the area to meet and plan the big event. They started their meetings in January. The schools decided decid-ed what they wanted to do and coordinated coor-dinated their ideas. "It's really up to the school staff to plan it," said Mrs. Saupe. Mrs. DeVed said in most years they have had demonstrations in the schools during this week. "I really think it's a great time. I'm excited ex-cited about it," said Mrs. Saupe. Tuesday night the Festival of Instrumental In-strumental and Choral Music was held with William Caldwell, principal of Uintah Uin-tah High School, as master of cermonies. Carolyn Slade, instructor at the Uintah learning Center, was in charge of the flag ceremony. The festival this night included Uintah High School Concert Band, Uintah High School Acappella Choir, and Uintah Hi-Lites. Hi-Lites. The Festival of Music was held Wendesday night with Earl Allred. principal prin-cipal of Todd Elementary, as master of ceremonies. All of the schools sang "America Loves Me" afterwhich the flag ceremony was presented by Boy Scout Troop No. 775. They had the seven historic flags. Performing that night was Todd fourth and fifth grades. Naples second grade, Maeser fifth grade, and a finale. The Festival of Music continued Thursday Thurs-day night with Len Gotfredson, principal of Ashley Elementary as master of ceremonies. The song and flag ceremony were performed the same as the previous evening. Performing that night were Discovery first grade, Central fourth grade, Ashley Singers, Vernal Middle School - sixth grade choir, and finale. Tonight (Friday) will be the Festival of Instrumental and Choral Music with Philip Ellis, superintendent of schools, as master of ceremonies. The flag ceremony will be presented by Girl Scout Troop No. 442. Then the Uintah Community School Youth Orchestras Or-chestras will perform. Todd Elementary School Recorder Band, Todd Elementary Elemen-tary School Band, Vernal Middle School - sixth grade band, Vernal Middle School, Vernal Junior High School Band, and the Vernal Junior High School Concert Choir will perform. To complete the week's activities, Saturday, April 30, there will be an arts and craft fair for the children from 1-3 p.m. This is under the Kommonettes Club with Diane Coltharp as president. The children will be doing many fun things such as painting, molding clay, and many more activities. This will wrap up the week's Festival of the Arts for another year. Throughout the week, there have also been displays outside the auditorium at the junior high consisting of arts and crafts of the children for the public to view. |
