Show Mountain Bell to do more than just ring telephones "Do your banking at. ..The airline that cares about you is. ..At the sound of the tone the time will be Eleven o'clock. The weather today in Vernal will be sunny with temperatures in the 70s." This is an example of what callers may soon be hearing when they call the local time-of-day number in the future, according to Mountain Bell Utah Public Relations Manager, Ken Hill, "In compliance with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) Commis-sion) Computer Inquiry II decision and the divestiture of the Bell System, we are no longer permitted to provide public announcement services such as time and temperature, weather, road conditions, etc.," Hill explained: As a result of these rulings, private sponsors will be providing this service in the near future, according to Hill. "The Vail Executive Group will be providing the service in Vernal." He said the sponsors will continue to use the existing time and temperature number listed in the local telephone directory. "They will be buying or leasing their own announcement equipment, and after connecting it to our local network, will use the existing number to sell time to various advertisers adver-tisers or to promote their products or services exclusively," Hill mentioned. Where no business entity elects to provide this service, Hill said Mountain Moun-tain Bell will continue to offer it on a public service basis until Jan. 1, 1984 when service will be discontinued as stipulated by divestiture. Under the Computer Inquiry II ruling, rul-ing, anyone will be able to compete with the customer who purchases the time and temperature service and may offer the same service under a different telephone number, Hill commented. |
