"The object is obtaining and maintaining main-taining healthy bodies," said Miriam Link-Mullison from the State Health Department in Salt Lake. Tuesday, May 3 the State Health Department visited Vernal letting the Uintah Basin Health Department try out a new program which they are hoping to adopt. Before coming to Vernal, Ver-nal, they stopped in Duchesne to have a group from that area go through the program, also. In Vernal the principals and administrators ad-ministrators of the schools and county coun-ty commissioners were a part of the first group to go through the program at 3 p.m. Later at 5 p.m. some of the members of the Chamber of Commerce Com-merce went through the program. According to Cricket Brown, Uintah Basin health educator, they used these two particular groups first to see what their response is to it and to see if it is a worthwhile program to have in Vernal. Mrs. Brown said their long-range goal is to get the businesses and the community of Vernal to go through the program and follow up with classes and other programs depending on the need for them and the interest. Those participating in the program preregistered and paid a fee of $20. Then on Tuesday each person met to go through the program. Each checked check-ed in and had their forms checked over which they had to fill out. Mrs. Brown said they couldn't have eaten in the last six hours before coming. After signing in, each participant had their blood pressure taken. They were measured for their height and had their weight taken. A urinalysis was also done. Answer sheets were filled fill-ed out, too. After all of the preliminary work was taken care of, an introduction of the staff from the state was made and a few instructions were given. The workshop included various types of tests. One of the tests was a grip test. Another was a flexibility test. Then each one was given a turn on the stationary bikes to check their cardiovascular car-diovascular proficiency. A nutrition profile was also a part of the workshop. Each participant filled out a series of papers about their individual in-dividual diet. Blood was taken from each one to check their hemoglobin and cholesterol. A skin fold test was taken, too. After all of the forms were filled out and checked over, the participants were free to go. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for May 11. At this time, each participant will get back a computer print out from Salt Lake where all of the results have been sent. The computer print out will give the results of the tests taken. It will have recommendations on it about changes the individual might make to help him be healthier. It will also have other information in-formation on relating to that particular par-ticular individual. Possibly there will be classes available for the people to help them make the changes suggested sug-gested depending on need and interest. Mrs. Brown said, "We want to get the whole community thinking about prevention. This is just step one."
