Show Union High School won their third quarterfinal game in the past four years in 2-A competition, Tuesday in Roosevelt as they knocked off San Juan, 4-1. Chad Richard's two run homer in the bottom of the second inning in-ning gave the Cougars the lead in the ball game that they would never lose in the rest of the contest. Mike Ross and Lonnie Sammaripa darted around the bases for two runs in the bottom of the third for a 4-1 lead. Brett Cramer got on the base paths three times for the Union Cougars as he singled, reached first on a dropped third strike and walked. Union took advantage ad-vantage of the dropped third strike as Richard homered. Cramer's single drove in Sammaripa in the third inn- ing. Richard also reached first on a walk and also delivered another shot to the fence, but the wind kept it from going over for a homer. Kenny Anderton Ander-ton and Mike Ross singled for the Cougars and Sammaripa and Bryan Eldredge were walked. A homer played an important part in Union's 1981 quarterfinal triumph over Manti. The game was tied at 5-5 going into the bottom of the eighth inning. in-ning. Dean Townsend ripped the baseball over the fence for a homer and a 6-5 Union victory. The pitch was a fast ball right up the middle. A homer by Steve Jackson of Manti tied up the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning. Union High School's Lonnie Sammaripa Sam-maripa struck out ten, allowed one hit and walked four batters in the Cougars' win over San Juan in the 1983 2-A state quarter-finals. A Cougar pitcher, pit-cher, Tracy Dye, turned in an outstanding outstan-ding pitching gem for the Cougars in a 6-0 quarterfinal win over North Sanpete in 1980. Dye hurled a two-hitter two-hitter and struck out 11 batters. Union' Dye whiffed 11 of the 23 men he faced. The Cougars' Tim Pittman turned in some fine defensive gems in the 1980 game with North Sanpete and scored two of the Union six runs. Ron Gates was 2 for 3 with a double and single. Union High School's girl track team turned in an outstanding performance at the Brigham Young University Invitational In-vitational Friday in the 2-A class with a sixth place finish at 30 points. Wood River, Idaho placed first at 90 and Wasatch nabbed second at 69. The Cougar's Elva Ames placed first in the 400 meters at 1:00.15 and placed second in the 200 meter dash at 27.15. Mortenson placed fourth in the 1600 meters at 5:54.77 and Collier nabbed third place in the 300 hurdles at 49.61. Union placed sixth in the 400 relay and Mortenson picked up sixth in the 3200 meters. In the 2-A boys' division Mecham of Union placed fourth in the 400 meter run at 53.27 and Lefler, Union, netted second in the 3200 meter run at 10:19.40. |
