Show In The iood Sid Says 50 YEARS AGO June 16, 1932 The new postage rates on first and second class matter, designated recently by Congress, will be placed into effect in Vernal on July 6, according to instructions received from Washington D.C., Saturday by Postmaster E.J. Young. Under the new schedule, the first class rate is raised from two to three cents for each ounce or fraction, and business reply letter rates are increased from three cents to four cents per ounce. The rates on post cards, including business reply post cards, remain the same. Postage on certain types of second class matter is about one-third higher under the new system. All postage must be fully prepaid. Instead of being five cents for the first ounce and 10 cents for each additional ounce as now, the airmail rate is jumped to eight cents for the first ounce and 13 cents for each additional ounce or fraction. Work on the city waterworks replacement has been temporarily suspended pending the sale of the remainder of the waterworks bonds. With the sale of the $38,000 of bonds remaining unsold, a considerable amount of pipe will be laid in the city limits with the main line to the settling tank. To complete the work about two or three months of steady work will be required. The labor alone there will be expended about $7,000 to complete the program. While the gravel equipment of Young and Ogden was near the limits of the city, arrangements were made by city officers and businessmen to have practically all the parking adjacent to the business center of town given a gravel surface. The Vernal-Manila highway, for one-half mile north of the monument, also received a four-inch surface of gravel. Practically all of the graveling within the limits of the city was paid for by the business firms. 30 YEARS AGO June 19, 1952 Standard Saddle Tree Company of Vernal is enlarging their plant with a 60 by 30 foot room in order to increase operations and make a storage space available, according to the three owners, Laurence Fox, Raymond White and Kenneth Hadlock. The company which manufactures saddle trees and cinches, to be shipped all over the United States, has been operating at its present location for three years and now employs 18 people. Two hundred kids had a big time on the opening day of fishing season last Saturday at the Ashley Central canal where fishing was specially restricted to boys and girls under 14, the old folks, and anyone who is handicapped. They trampled the grass and shouted with glee as each wriggling fish was pulled from the water. Game Warden Fred Reynolds reported that a low telephone line running overhead and parallel with the canal was well lined with fish hooks, lines and bobbers before the fishing day ended. Vernal's gigantic, better then ever, 1952 Rodeo, complete wtih cowboy stars, champion clowns and wild bucking broncs, is on its way to thrill thousands of people in Vernal June 26, 27 and 28. More and more businessmen are buying space in the weekly newspaper because they have found a real value in the product, Charles W. Claybaugh, president of the Utah State Press Association, told honor journalism students at the Uinversity of Utah recently. Arrangements have been made for a summer reading room for children in connection with the Uintah County Library. The kindergarten room just across the hall from the library will be used for that purpose. Every afternoon Monday through Friday from 2 until 4 children are invited to enjoy a story hour. |
