Show j National Scene Education columnist dies in auto mishap 3 1 Educational columnist Dr. Max Rafferty, two-year state a superintendent of schools in California 1 during the gubernatorial j administration of Ronald Reagan, has 1 Winanauto accident near Troy, Ala. 1 He was 65. Rafferty had been serving as dean of education at Troy State University sinceleaving the California post in 1971. The accident occurred shortly before ""on Sunday on a country road eight "J'te south of Troy when the car raged into a pond off of a dam, according to state troopers. Rafferty was born in New Orleans, grew up in California and was educated at UCLA. He was known to be colorful with his public statements about conservative ideas. He gained prominence while heading a small school district in southern California when he made a speech entitled, "Passing of the Patriot," in which he promoted the principles of Revolutionary War colonist and school teacher, Nathan Hale. Dr. Rafferty, who opposed mandatory school busing to achieve integration, won the Republican primary in California for U.S. Senator in 1968, but lost to Democrat Alan Cranston in the general election. |
