Show AAaeser school wins Valley Forge honor Maeser' Elementary was one of 29 schools in the country to be awarded the Valley Forge Honor Certificate last week for 1980, for their crepe paper representation of flags which have flown over America. Under the direction of Doris Morrill, the fifth grade at the school made 14 flags of the Vikings, France, England, Old Glory and others which have flown over the United States. A scrapbook with pictures of the student's projects was sent last summer sum-mer to the Freedom Foundation, who annually presents the Valley Forge Honor Certificate. The presentation of the award was made public Thursday, May 21, at a meeting held in conjunction with the Salt Lake Kiwanis Oub. Loren D. . Martin, vice chairman of the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge, Utah Chapter, was at Maeser Elementary last Friday and presented the award to Senator Glade Sowards, who presented the award to the school. Martin said that Maester Elementary was one of two elementary schools to be presented the award. The other was in American Fork, Utah. Martin toured the project the Maeser fifth graders plan to submit to the contest this year. Groups of three students have been working on flags of the 50 states. The flags are also made of crepe paper. Mrs. Morrill said the Maeser School has won the Valley Forge Honor Certificate Cer-tificate for five of the last six years. "With this year's project, we hope to show the students that we just didn't all of a sudden become a nation," Mrs. Morrill said. |
