Knudson of Ogden were undefeated after the first day of the Vernal Memorial Tournament, Tour-nament, Saturday, but the most unusual game of the day had to be a consolation battle between Young's Paint of Vernal and Utex Oil of Roosevelt. Young's Paint downed the Nation team of Fort Duchesne in the first round and dropped a 20 to 13 contest to the Tribe of Many Feathers from Provo. Utex Oil was downed by Ver-nal's Ver-nal's Intel-mountain Diggers in the first round and defeated the Hospital team to advance into the game with Young's Paint, the defending tournament champion. The crew from Vernal, Young's Paint, knocked seven pitches over the fence for home runs, but Utex Oil slugged ten softballs over the fence for homers and eliminated Young's Paint from the tournament by the score of 36 to 21. A total of 17 homers were hit in the game and .Bill Fisher of Utex Oil had three homers. Steve Yack, Randy Tomaiko and Charlie Winckel slugged two homers each for Utex Oil. Utex Oil leaped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Fisher ripped the softball for a grand slam homer. Young's Paint scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to cut Utex Oil's lead to 4 to 1. Ron Gardner connected for a homer in the bottom of the second inning and Young's Paint gained runners on third and first when Frank Young knocked over Dennis Jensen and was safe at third base. Monte Lee delivered a 5 to 4 lead to Young's Paint when he sent the softball on a trip over the fence. Home runs by Danny Long in the second inning in-ning and Carlos Reed in the third inning, in-ning, gave Young's Paint a 7 to 4 lead. Brent Labium got on base and was driven in on. a double by Young. The Roosevelt-Duchesne team had a 12 to 11 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but the lead was shortlived shor-tlived as Young's Paint struck for two homers and grabbed a 15 to 12 lead. Long got on base and scored when a Utex Oil outfielder fell down. Labrum slugged a two-run homer and Levi Smuin drilled the softball for a home run. Young's Paint had a 15 to 12 advantage, ad-vantage, but Utex Oil quickly regained the lead in the ball game with eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. Yack smashed the softball for a homer. Moore singled and was driven in on a triple to tie up the game at 15-15. The softball blaster. Fisher, struck again for the third time as he ripped a pitch by Huber for a two-run homer and gave Utex Oil a 17 to 15 lead. Utex Oil scored three more runs for a 20 to 15 advantage. ad-vantage. The Vernal crew scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut Utex Oil's lead to 20 to 16. Buckalew gained a double and Lee was walked. Strout Realty of Roosevelt downed Mountain States of Vernal and suffered a second round setback to the Super Saver team. Coors of Helper downed the Strokers of Provo, In-termountain In-termountain Diggers of Vernal, 10 to 9 and the Lamplighter (Basin Bailers) of Vernal in order to advance into the semi-finals. Lamplighter downed Basin Wholesale West of Roosevelt and Neola. Neola toppled Tosco of Vernal. The Diggers toppled Utex Oil. Rocky Mountain Glass defeated Freestone Construction of Vernal and King Koal of Price. The glass crew advanced into the semi-nnais with a victory over the Tribe of Many Feathers. King Koal downed Twin Cinema of Vernal and Young's Paint toppled the Nation team. The Tribe of Many Feathers toppled Young's Paint. Ohran Construction advanced into the semi-finals with victories over Target Trucking, Vernal, and Marx' Body of Price. Marx Body downed Western Company and Outsiders, Vernal, 8 to 2. Target Trucking downed Intermountain Transport of Cleveland and the Outsiders downed Robbins Construction of Evanston. Consolation game results were as follows: Tosco over Mountain States, Utex Oil over Hospital, Tosco over Basin Wholesale, Freestone over Twin Cinema, Robbins over Western Company, Steve's Body over Target Trucking, Outsiders over Tosco, Utex Oil over Young's Paint, Diggers over Nation, Freestone over Neola, Strout over Robbins, Ashtons over Intermountain In-termountain Transport, Tosco over King Koal, Steve's Body over Outsiders, Out-siders, Utex Oil over Tosco, Freestone over Diggers and Strout over Ashtons.
