Show ; Fishflirag peimeir m h ' oodB (re(o3s stoskodl I d ii inhn C. Dickerson fish ) By John C. Dickerson 'tah State Division 0 wildlife Resources rtis Saturday marks the opener of General fishing season, and 250,000 trs are expected to wet a line. The 3 for our area is for good fishing. The majority of our streams have stocked with catchable size 9"-12" f sh and of course, the reservoirs were stocked last year with fingerlings which will make up the majority of the catch. In the Vernal area, Steinaker will likely draw the biggest crowd and fishing should be fair to good. The best thing about Steinaker is the fish that will be taken-our gilnetting showed the fish to be in excellent shape with a fair share of them in the one to two pound class. Boat fishermen should once again outfish the bank fishermen by a considerable margin. The bass in Steinaker continue to be an under-harvested under-harvested resource and some of them are reaching very respectable size-five size-five to six pounds, but the average fish is much smaller than that and most bass continue to be caught incidental to trout fishing. Crouse Reservoir over wintered without its usual winterkill, so you can expect good fishing there and the same applies to Calder Reservoir. Bullock Reservoir should also be good fishing, but Brough will likely be fair at the best. This reservoir has mainly rainbow trout in it but there are smallmouth bass, although small, and some good sized largemouth bass present. There are two new regulations this year that need mentioning. First is a reduced bag and possession limit of six trout on the opening weekend. This regulation includes both streams and reservoirs after the first two days the limit goes back to eight trout (no more than two mackinaw however). The reason behind this regulation is to try to spread the catch of fish out over a longer period rather than having so many taken during the opening weekend. The second regulation applies to streams and rivers only and is in effect the entire season. This law says an angler may not have more than two fish over thirteen inches in length. If you happen to catch two fish over thirteen inches and you are worried about releasing the next big one you hook because it might die, I'd suggest one of the following; either switch to an artificial ar-tificial lure which seldom if ever hooks a fish in any place but the lip or cut the . This sie restriction is once again aimed at reducing the opening weekend take anrl spreading out the catch over a longer period By the lime you read this, we will have flown the high 1'intas to check 011 access, so if you are interested in the high lakes, give us a call at our Vernal office for an up-to-date report. |
