'i I i v STUDENT VIOLINISTS honored for the month Three Vernal Youth violinists were chosen to be the Vernal Youth Orchestra Or-chestra Students of tne Month Jan. 29, by a panel of parents. Cory Hackford, Ivan Mott and Kerry Cameron were chosen for the January sward. Cory Hackford is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Hackford. He attends 4th grade at Maeser Elementary School. Cory began playing violin in October when the Vernal Youth Orchestra began its 1980-81 season. He is a member of Curtis May's section. Cory chose the violin because he thought it would be fun and he didn't disappoint himself because he now lists baseball, football and playing violin as his favorite things to do. Kerry Cameron, the daughter of Dale and Ruth Cameron is also a 4th grade il'.-dent at Maeser Elementary School. She represented Linda Hamberg's section. sec-tion. She lists bicycle riding, swimming, swimm-ing, and playing her violin as her. favorite things to do. Kerry's father piays violin and she says that it has been fun having her dad help her learn to play the instrument. Ivan Mott, the son of Connie and Niles Mott is a third grade student at Naples Elementary School. He represented Katherine Day's Section. He lists reading, baseball, and playing his violin as his favorite things to do. Ivan's parents give him a lot of encouragement. encourage-ment. He began to play the violin in October Oc-tober and he says he especially wants to lrn to fiddle. -.,- . . of February are Cory Hackford, Kerry Cameron and Ivan Mott. Three youth violinists make student of month Each orchestra section chose two representatives in semifinal sectional play-offs earlier in the week. The top ten finalists chosen were Cory HacKford and Lex Cook from Curtis Cur-tis May's violin section, Ivan Mott and Suzanne Slaugh from Katherine Day's violin section, Kerry Cameron and Becky Anderson from Linda Hamberg's violin section, Joseph Day and Deena McDonald from Cindy Gale's viola section and Mike Sowards and David Snodgrass from Marjean Oviatt's cello section. The student of the month honor can only be won once. Once the student has won the award, he is entitled to wear a special Top String T-Shirt and to act as a judge for future play-offs. Violist, Deena McDonald won the practice award for the beginning orchestra. or-chestra. She reached a whopping 15 hours 35 minutes of practice for the January award. She was given a box of chocolates as a reward for her effort. The Vernal Youth Orchestra pro gram is directed by Ora Fay Oviatt. The a-Janced orchestra quintette presented a studio recital for their parents and guests last Thursday, Jan. 29. Each member of the group was required re-quired to play the C, G, D and A major scales and arpeggios as their January assignment. After the scale and arpeggio play-off, the group played the following selections: selec-tions: "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony, "Spring is Here," an early 17th century melody and "Red River Valley." The students performed in both unison and four part harmony. ADVANCE ORCHESTRA MEMBERS strum up a tune. Members of the orchestra are Joelle Philip Oviatt, violinist, won the January practice award of a box of chocolates. Philip practiced 15 hours and 5 minutes during the month of January. Refreshments were served at the conclusion con-clusion of the recital. Members of the advanced orchestra quintette are Philip Oviatt, violin; Rhonda Ames, violin; Joelle Oviatt, viola; Kyle Cox, viola; and Marjean Oviatt, cello.
