"Fiddler" is a two-hour overview of a Jewish community. It symoblizes the customs, joys and sorrows of a whole race of people who have tried for two thousand years to establish a niche somewhere to call their own, and end up moving on when they no longer fit. It's the story of Tevye, the milkman of Anietevka. He has been lax in arranging arrang-ing marriages for his daughters of marrying age. His wife Golde is frustrated to distraction due to his lack of concern. When the daughters realize who Yente, the matchmaker .is,- the daughters arrange their own marriages. mar-riages. This is a "no-no" in custom. This is also where the fun and trouble begin. |
