Show FIRST WARD CONFERENCE. A local conference was held in the Tabernacle by the first ward of Logan on last Sunday forenoon and afternoon. There were present on the stand in the forenoon President W. B. Preston and Counselor C. O. Card, Bishop B. M. Lewis and his counselors, Elder E. M. Curtis and others. After devotional services the subject of the meetings was stated by Bishop Lewis to be for the purpose of presenting reports from the different organizations, of tithes and donations, etc., and to give the president of the Stake an opportunity to examine the records, and the spiritual conditions of the people of the ward, and to make suggestions as he should deem proper. The teacher's quorum was reported by Elder M. H. Barnes. There were 30 acting teachers, of whom one was a Seventy, one a High Priest, and 28 were Elders. All the members of the Ward were visited once in two months, and oftener when necessary. The Y. M. M. I. A. was reported by Elder J. E. Carlysle. The association had been adjourned for some time but a lively interest had prevailed to the last and, was made manifest in the study of Church works which had been adopted as an exercise. President Preston spoke at some length upon the temporal and spiritual duties of the Saints, and read from the circular from the Prophet Brigham Young issued shortly before his death on the subject. He exhorted the officers and members to diligence in the performance of their duties. In the afternoon Bishop Lewis gave some other reports and also many good instructions to the people. He was followed by Elder E. M. Curtis who spoke in an interesting way in relation to his late mission to Europe. Elder Curtis contrasted the condition of the people in the old world, and that of the Saints in these valleys. Spoke of the gratification which an absent Elder experienced on receipt of letters and even a little financial assistance from his friends in Utah. He said that he had been blessed while on his mission, and though glad to be home once more with his family, would not give for the wealth of the world the knowledge which he had gained. Counselor C. O. Card addressed the Saints for a short time. He read from the revelation of the Lord with regard to Tithing and explained many things to the edification of his hearers. |
