Show COURAGEOUS. Tuesday last a runaway occurred, which might have proved very disastrous, but for the courage and presence of mind of Mr. Ed. (Edward) Hanson. A team attached to a wagon loaded with goods while standing in front of Z. C. M. I., were frightened by a barking dog, and dashed southward until they had obtained a terrible speed. Several ineffectual attempts were made to stop them; and just as they reached Second street it seemed that they would crash into a vehicle coming from the other direction, and containing several ladies. Mr. Hanson, seeing the situation, ran from the sidewalk, overtook the flying steeds, grasped their bits, and succeeded in turning them from their course in time to prevent a serious catastrophe. They were finally brought to a standstill, having done but little damage to themselves or to the wagon. |
