Show Scandal Has for its domain a broad field. It reaches every locality; and except for being immaculate, one cannot effectually dispute its power when once it assails. But occasionally it receives a strong hit by way of speech; and as an illustration, the following is told in an exchange: A man, whom we will call Brown, was met on the street of the town where he resides, by a false and gloating friend, who said, "Brown, I'm sorry to say that you conduct has been such that your character is lost. All kinds of stories have been circulated about you." "Is that so?" asked Brown. "Then if the scandal-mongers have commenced on my character, it is indeed lost - entirely lost. And that is a confounded shame, too, because it was the only character in this town worth saving." |
