Show THROUGH THE FILES Of THE TIMES-INDEPENDENT AND THE GRAND VALLEY TIMES 10 Years Ago At a regular meeting of the Grand County Commission, a nod of approval was given the new trailer court assessing system presented by Assessor Kenneth Beach. Mr. Beach said he planned to assess courts in 1968 in accordance to spaces in use. Contributions for the Grand County Library Fund reached $8,286 this week. The Grone-man Grone-man Construction Co., Or em, started work this week on the building, to be located on the Center Street property held for over 50 years as a county library site. The survey of the Grand-San Juan County line had just been completed by Grand County Surveyor Hub Newell and San Juan County Surveyor Donald Blake. The line survey was the result of a court decision in 1958 to settle a legal dispute between the two counties over location of the line. The disputed area was only two-thirds two-thirds of a mile wide, but this was a big issue tax-wise in some mineral rich areas of San Juan and Grand. 20 Years Ago The overcrowded conditions of Moab schools, the cost of a new high school building, and other pertinent facets of school problems were subject of an elementary PTA meeting. Gov. George D. Clyde announced the appointment of Moab Chamber manager, Mil Pimpell to the Utah Committee of Industrial Employment Planning. D. James Cannon, director of the Utah Tourist and Publicity Council, directed a meeting in Moab under the theme, "Let's Make Tourism Utah's No. 1 Industry." 40 Years Ago Survey crews were to be in the field to make preliminary examination of routes for the proposed new scenic highway traversing the Natural Bridges and Wayne Wonderland sections sec-tions of Southeastern Utah, the State Road Commission stated this week. J. Reed Lance announced this week that coal from his mine in Thompson Canyon was ready for delivery at $3 per ton, picked up at the mine, and $6 per ton if delivered. The Montelores Chamber of Commerce, the civic organization organiza-tion of Southwestern Colorado, held its monthly meeting at Dove Creek with about 100 members present. One of the matters of business was passing a resolution urging the designation of a mail route between Thompson, Utah and Gallup, N.M., in view of the community link offered by completion of Highway No. 160 between Cortez and Dove Creek and the need for mail connections serving the many towns between the points mentioned. 60 Years Ago The second Liberty Loan drive went over the top in the County, a total of 550,650 being subscribed at the two Moab banks. Practically every family in the county signed for a bond. Work started this week on the school sewer system. Engineer Walker Paul completed com-pleted the post road survey from Thompson to Moab. |
