McDougald McDoug-ald this week signed a proclamation procla-mation designating November 13 through 19 as American Education Week. He stressed that by doing so, he was encouraging citizens to reaffirm reaf-firm their committment to improving education on all levels and to translate that committment into action by visiting local schools. The theme of American Education Week, "Working Together for Education," can only be carried out through the cooperation of the entire community with the local public schools. Public education educa-tion represents a community, state and national effort to improve the quality of life, but this goal cannot be realized unless the community's citizens citi-zens help to define the goals of the school and to evaluate the results, says Doris Wilson, president of the Teachers' Association. Teachers, both locally and nationwide, are concerned that not enough communication communica-tion takes place between them and the parents of their students. It is necessary for teachers to know that things parents can tell them about the child for their teaching to be effective. If the child has a problem -he can get more consistent, sustained help if the parents work with him at home in the same way the teacher helps the child at school or vice versa. Parents can share in the schooling of their child by becoming interested in discip linary and academic programs and supporting these programs. prog-rams. They can help their child at home by encouraging him to practice the verbal and intellectural skills that he is learning at school. Parents should be in touch with the child's teacher so that interaction interac-tion can take place on an adult level instead of dealing with the teacher as the child sees him. In an effort to stress these goals of American Education Week, Grand County Schools are holding some events of interest to parents-including parent-teacher conferences. In addition, on Thursday, November 10, at 4 p.m. in the Home Ec. room of the High School Vocational Center, the Teacher of the Year will be announced. At that time an Open House will be held and the public is cordially invited and encouraged to attend. |
