Show CooiiTiissioiners review budget requests Monday was the deaclline set by the county commission for receiving requests for funds in the 1978 budget, and as a result, -0 c,r i :lssioners heard a steady stream of requests during the day. Ethel Krist outlined the needs for improvements at the rodeo grounds, presented on behalf of the grounds committee. They included a new 3-horse power pump at about $2,000; sprinkler pipe at $152; and concrete to set a 20x40 metal building on. The total request was for $2,790. Hannah Pittman, representing the Council on Aging and accompanied accom-panied by 24 senior citizens, made a plea for funds to be applied to a new senior citizen center. She indicated the seniors would be willing to raise a substantial amount themselves and stated the council had received estimates between $170,000 and $200,000 for a metal building. She also reminded commissioners commis-sioners that nutrition had been set as the number 1 priority for senior citizens in the county, and that 50-55 people are currently attending attend-ing the senior citizen dinners, with no room for expansion at the current facility. Dixie Barker presented formal requests on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Dev-elopment for $3,000 and $3,500 respectively. She also said the Economic Development Committee had passed a motion to hire James Erwin, a professional grantsman from Montrose, Co., to go after money for local projects when a list of priorities has been established. R. J. Miller, Jr., Les Graves, Bill Hines and Troy Black appeared on behalf of the First District and requested in-lieu money to budget for expansion of the district in Spanish Valley. They said they will need about $100,000 for a building, truck and equipment. Cliff Aldridge appeared on behalf of the Sheriff's Department and requested $5,000 for a building to be built on the county yard to house their equipment. All budget requests were taken under advisement, and commissioners commis-sioners held a preliminary meeting Tuesday evening to discuss priorities. prior-ities. A public hearing on the budget will be held before it is formally adopted. Law Enforcement Jim West appeared to protest the lack of law enforcement in the county, relating an incident of vandalism on Oct. 15 which was finally responded to by a city police officer, who had no jurisdiction in the county. West requested that city officers be deputized to enforce law in the county when members of the Sheriff's department are not available to respond. Sheriff W. H. Bowman said he has included money in his 1978 budget request for an additional . deputy, which should help improve the situation. West stated, on behalf of county residents, that as i Spanish Valley continues to grow, the people there will experience more and more of this kind of problem with law breakers, and that they deserve coverage against : this kind of problem. j In other business, the commission commis-sion signed a resolution agreeing to ' purchase a used loader from Wheeler Machinery for a total cost of $69,000. A down payment of $2,000 was approved, with the balance payable in 1978. According to the company spokesman, the unit has 140 hours of use, and rents for $2,000 a month, and the price quoted, under these circumstances, circum-stances, is very reasonable. Norma Nunn appeared and presented a letter from Richard Nunn regarding the lack of maintenance on the Sand Flat Road. She was informed the road cannot be brought up to a good standard because of the expense in doing so compared with road usage. Elaine Peterson, representing the Cemetery District, asked the commission's help in getting the cemetery boundaries straightened out, and commissioners agreed.
